Well everyone has learned that Christopher Columbus
discovered
America, well there was Fred Finnochio who is almost as famous for discovering Fred Bread. Fred was a bit of a mischievous child. At age four he was already launching water balloons at the neighbors and setting off stink bombs at the town market place. Fred came from the town of Montecassino, Italy. With all his boyish pranks his parents decided it was time for a change. They purchased a couple of tickets to board the San Georgio and away to America they came the year 1918.
America was a dream for the whole family. Fred trying hard to be a good boy got restless one day and started throwing the ball to himself in the house. His mother was in the kitchen cooking some of her delicious bread that the Finnochio family was so admired for when he heard his mother shout, "Fred no ball in the house". Fred stopped immediately until his mothers back was turned of course and there he went again this time the ball slipping out of his hands and right into the kitchen. The ball then proceeded to bounce off the table knocking over his mothers dish of melted butter and smashed into the spice rack breaking some special spices. His mother cried, "my bread you have ruined it. You spilled butter and spices all over my bread that I have spent all this time working on. Now you will have to eat the whole thing."
Fred was saddened that he tried to be so good but had just ruined
his mothers bread until he tasted it. His mother noticed how fast
Fred was eating the bread and decided to try a bite. It was delicious.
She quickly wrote down the spices that had once thought to be
the ruin of her already delicious bread and now had a new recipe
to make the Finnochio family stand out once more as the best bread
makers around. Fred was the hero.
Mrs Finnochio was so happy with her sons mischievous discovery she named the bread after him. Al DiManno being Fred's favorite nephew was lucky enough to get the recipe from Fred himself several years later on the condition that the recipe stays with us and never leaves the premises. Of course we agreed and now tell the story of the mischievous Fred Finnochio and the great discovery of Fred Bread.
